Literature, Legend, and the Heroic-Comic Spirit of Alessandro Tassoni
A War for a Wooden Bucket? If you visit the Ghirlandina Tower in Modena, you’ll find a strange sight: a simple, old wooden bucket hanging from the ceiling. To a stranger, it looks like common trash. To a Bolognese, it is the reminder of the only battle they ever lost to their neighbors—and the inspiration for one of the most unique masterpieces in Italian literature.
The Battle of Zappolino (1325) The year was 1325. The rivalry between the Guelphs (Bologna) and the Ghibellines (Modena) was at its peak. During a border skirmish, a group of Modenese soldiers sneaked into Bologna and stole a wooden bucket from a public well near Porta San Felice. Bologna, insulted, demanded its return. Modena refused. The result? The Battle of Zappolino, one of the largest medieval battles, involving over 32,000 soldiers.
Alessandro Tassoni’s Literary Revolution Centuries later, this event was immortalized by the Modenese poet Alessandro Tassoni in his masterpiece: La Secchia Rapita (The Stolen Bucket).
- The Format: Written in twelve cantos using “ottave” (eight-line stanzas), Tassoni’s work created a brand-new genre: the heroic-comic poem.
- The Irony: He took a bloody, serious historical event and turned it into a brilliant satire. He used the high, epic style of Homer and Virgil to describe a war fought over… a simple bucket.
- The Soul of Italy: Through his verses, Tassoni captured the passionate, stubborn, and deeply ironic spirit that still defines the Emilia-Romagna region today.
