Why Bologna? A Medieval stroke of genius The story began in the Middle Ages, coinciding with the explosion of the world’s oldest University. As thousands of students flocked to the city, Bologna ran out of space.
- The solution: Instead of building new houses, citizens extended the upper floors of their homes outward over the streets, supported by wooden (and later stone) beams.
- The result: Private living space was created above, while the ground below remained public for citizens to walk, trade, and socialize.
Records and Secrets under the Arches Every arch tells a different story. Here are a few highlights you can discover:
- The World Record: The Portico of San Luca. At nearly 4 kilometers long with 666 arches, it connects the city to the Sanctuary on the hill. It’s the ultimate Bolognese experience.
- The Narrowest: Located in Via Senzanome, measuring only 95 centimeters wide
- The Highest: The portico of the Archbishop’s Palace in Via Altabella, reaching nearly 10 meters in height.
