The Standards of Beauty and Business: The Ancient Measures of Bologna Sottotitolo: How Piazza Maggiore regulated trade and construction for centuries through stone and law.

🇬🇧 If you walk towards the entrance of Palazzo d’Accursio (the Town Hall) in Piazza Maggiore, you might notice something unusual carved into the red bricks, just near the main portal. They aren’t scars of time or simple decorations: they are the official measures of the city, the ancient “Standard Units” that every merchant, architect, and mason in Bologna had to follow.

In a time before the International System of Units (the meter as we know it), every major city had its own reference. In Bologna, trust was built on stone. The most prominent markings represent the Piede Bolognese (the Bolognese Foot), about 38 cm, and the Braccio (the Arm), used for fabrics. Next to them, you can find the “shapes” of the perfect Bolognese Brick and Roof Tile.

These carvings are a testament to Bologna’s history as a center of trade and law. When our students at ALCE visit the Piazza during the Social Program, they learn that Bologna’s beauty isn’t accidental—it was literally “measured” to perfection.
