🇬🇧 English Text If you walk under the Voltone del Podestà in Bologna, you’ll often see people facing the corners of the pillars, seemingly talking to the wall. They aren’t crazy! They’re testing one of the city’s most fascinating acoustic secrets. Thanks to the vault’s unique curvature, if you whisper into one corner, someone in the opposite corner will hear you clearly, as if using a telephone. Legend has it that this system allowed lepers in the Middle Ages to confess without the risk of infecting priests.
It’s one of the many “secrets” that make studying in Bologna a continuous discovery. At ALCE, we believe that the best way to learn the language is to live the city’s history firsthand.
