🇬🇧 The Skinned Men: The Secret Heart of the Archiginnasio
Inside the magnificent Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, once the main seat of the University of Bologna, lies one of the city’s most breathtaking rooms: the Teatro Anatomico (Anatomical Theatre). Built in 1637 and entirely carved from spruce wood, this amphitheater-like room was where medical students gathered to watch human dissections.
The most striking feature of the room are the two life-sized wooden statues known as “Gli Spellati” (The Skinned Men), which flank the professor’s chair. These masterpieces of anatomical detail were highly controversial at the time, as the architect and artists had to balance scientific precision with the strict religious oversight of the Inquisition. Today, standing in the center of the room, you can almost hear the hushed whispers of 17th-century students witnessing the birth of modern medicine.

🇮🇹 Gli Spellati: Il Cuore Segreto dell’Archiginnasio
All’interno del magnifico Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio, un tempo sede principale dell’Università di Bologna, si trova una delle sale più mozzafiato della città : il Teatro Anatomico. Costruito nel 1637 e interamente intagliato in legno d’abete, questa sala simile a un anfiteatro era il luogo in cui gli studenti di medicina si riunivano per assistere alle dissezioni umane.
La caratteristica più impressionante della sala sono le due statue lignee a grandezza naturale conosciute come “Gli Spellati”, che fiancheggiano la cattedra del professore. Questi capolavori di dettaglio anatomico furono molto controversi all’epoca, poiché l’architetto e gli artisti dovettero bilanciare la precisione scientifica con la stretta sorveglianza religiosa dell’Inquisizione. Oggi, stando al centro della sala, sembra quasi di sentire i sussurri degli studenti del XVII secolo che assistono alla nascita della medicina moderna.
