Today marks the seven-hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Zappolino, one of the greatest battles of the Middle Ages. At Zappolino, in the territory between Modena and Bologna, the Bolognese Guelphs and the Modenese Ghibellines faced each other on a day destined to go down in history. From that event came the “Stolen Bucket,” the poem by Alessandro Tassoni that transformed a war episode into a literary tale destined to endure for centuries. At the center is the bucket: a symbol of the medieval rivalry between Modena and Bologna and, according to tradition, the object that the Modenese took from the Bolognese at the end of the battle as a symbol of victory. Today, it is kept in the Palazzo Comunale, open to visitors along with the other historic rooms and part of the building’s rich cultural heritage.
