VILLAMAGNA …a lesser known DOC

Villamagna DOC The Villamagna DOC designation is relatively new, introduced in 2011, and includes red wines made with Montepulciano grapes grown in the municipality of Villamagna. The DOC is also the result of feverish efforts undertaken in 2011 to create as many appellations as possible before Italy ceded control of the area to the European Union. Villamagna is located halfway between Tollo and Chieti, in the heart of the vast Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wine-growing area. Villamagna DOC wines can only be produced from grape varieties grown in the municipalities of Foro, Serrepenne, and Villamagna. Coming from the same grape variety and the same area, Villamagna DOC and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC wines have much in common.

Both are dry, red, medium-bodied wines with red fruit flavors and rounded tannins. Montepulciano is one of Italy’s most famous red grape varieties. This variety, which produces good wine yields, has thrived in Abruzzo since the mid-18th century. The grape produces wines with intense colors (ranging from ruby to purple, depending on the vintage and the winemaking techniques used), low acidity, and soft, subtle tannins. Sought after for their smooth flavors, intense color, and delicate tannins, Montepulciano wines are almost always best consumed young and are highly versatile when paired with food.
