According to Vegetius, a regular march took the legionaries to cover about 109 steps per minute, while with a brisk march the steps were about 120.
Vegetius tells us that Roman training required the soldiers to march for 20 Roman miles (about 30 km) in 5 hours during the summer; this is also to be considered the probable average distance that the legions covered to move from the old to the new camp.
It should be kept in mind that the Roman army on the march was like a city on the move, with tens of thousands of men and animals, baggage and baggage transported by wagons.
During military campaigns, there were more than one legion involved and such a high number of soldiers could form a very long snake, which could reach 20 km in length. When the vanguard began to set up the new camp, the rearguard had not long since abandoned the old one.
Something absolutely extraordinary.
