Centenary of Giacomo Puccini

The 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s death is an opportunity to commemorate one of the greatest composers in history.

Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca, home of rich musical traditions, on December 22, 1858. His family has a long and prestigious history linked to music in the province of Tuscany. Unfortunately, at only six years old, he saw his father Michele, organist and choirmaster of the Cathedral of San Martino, die. During his early youth, he was trained by his uncle Fortunato Magi in playing the organ and singing as a contralto. However, Fortunato soon declared to his sister Albina, the Maestro’s mother, that her son had no inclination for music.

Puccini’s greatness lies in his ability to create a magical and magnificent art that strikes everyone who listens. His operas alternate intense drama and simple feelings in majestic settings, all guided by music that is unmistakably his.
